Dominique Youx 2007 Fall Ball
I always look forward to a formal
ball. Maybe its because most of us clean up so nice, or because the
music is danceable, or perhaps its because in the early part of the
evening we can actually understand the lyrics. And so it was for 2007
Dominique Youx Fall Ball. The decorations were beautiful, the band, Ivy
Brothers, played at a level that allowed conversation and there was room
for all.
The ball serves two functions; it
starts the celebratory season of Marde Gras for the Krewe and, it allows
us to award the Baratarian Cup to a worthy recipient. As in the past,
the current reining King Bob Schrader and his Queen Amy Counts welcomed
members and their guests as they entered the ballroom. The presentation
part of the evening was opened by the Arnold High School ROTC Cadets
presenting the colors. The band then played our National Anthem. Wow!
Just six notes into The Star Spangled Banner voices of the guests could
be heard singing along. The longer the band played the more voices
joined in. Patriotism is very much alive and well in this part of the
realm!
Fred Lindholm, Past President, Past
King, and resident narrator again told the story of the gift of the
Baritarian Cup to Andrew Jackson by Dominique Youx and why we present it
annually to a local citizen the Krewe feels most worthy.
This year the cup was awarded to
Karen Haines. You know her as the Publisher of the News Herald, Member
of the Gulf Coast Community College Foundation, President of the Panama
City Chamber as well as a host of other volunteer committees. Her
acceptance speech was complementary and very much on point. Well done,
Karen!
Following the Cup award, our
current President, Trey Hutt, received his well-deserved service medal
and then King Bob Schrader awarded his Court Pirates and Princesses
their Medallions.
Thanks to an audio system that we
could actually understand the guests remained quiet and attentive during
the complete presentation. Yes, I know that’s hard to believe, but
true! The major distraction during the entire event was the disserts
that had been pre-positioned at every guest’s seat. There it sat, coyly
looking at us, seeming to say “eat me now before someone takes me”!
After an entrée of Blue Cheese Crusted Pork Loin and Proscciutto Wrapped
Chicken the Black Forrest Torte dissert was the perfect end to an
impressive meal! Service by the Edgewater Staff was excellent.
Just five of the original 46
pirates are still active in the Krewe so new members are a must to
sustain our organization. We welcome the following new pirates; Bryan
Errol Barnes, Mac Bland, Kirk Dye, Phillip Griffits Sr., Ryan Herring,
Tom Hutchens, Wayne Lindsey, Andy Pace, Randy Rawlings, Jim Roberson,
Carlton Schwartz, Joshua Scribner, Greg Smoken, and Jimmy Williams.
Avast, arrragh, and heave ho lads, get to it!
